California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph will retire from state service at the end of September, CARB said on Monday .

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced his senior adviser for climate, Lauren Sanchez, will take over as CARB’s next chair.

CARB is the state’s lead agency for climate programs and oversees air pollution control. The board is made up of 16 members, 12 of whom are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the State Senate.

Newsom appointed Randolph to her role in 2020 and her term hadn’t been set to expire until the end of 2026.
