SUNDERLAND, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Two men have learned their sentences after pleading guilty to committing a hate crime in Sunderland last year.

Back in July of 2024, 31-year-old Warren Martinez, and 25-year-old Thomas Patnode assaulted a liquor store owner and her fiancée after they refused to sell to them. Court documents say both the owner and fiancée are transgender and the two men used homophobic slurs during the attack.

Martinez physically attacked both people while Patnode threatened them with knives, leaving them both with serious injuries.

Martinez will serve up to 10 years in prison, and Patnode will spend two and a half years behind bars along with one year of probation.
