NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - President Donald Trump on Monday (Sept. 15) reiterated his opinion that the Louisiana National Guard should be deployed to New Orleans to help fight crime.

But the president does not have jurisdiction to make that call.

Republican Gov. Jeff Landry controls the Louisiana National Guard, which could deploy 1,000 troops to some of the state’s “urban centers” -- including New Orleans -- any day now, according to a published report.

The Washington Post on Saturday reported a proposed plan, citing Pentagon documents, for a domestic deployment that could extend through September 2026, should Landry make the request.

“This shouldn’t be a political decision. This is a public safety decision,” said Metropolitan Crime Commission president Rafael Goyeneche.
