STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) - The state is seeing an increase in wildfires, and with Stone County under a moderate drought, residents could be at risk.

In August, there were 85 wildfires in the state of Mississippi, covering about 830 acres. Through just the first two weeks of September, there have been 84 wildfires- covering just over 1,000 acres.

Public Info and Outreach Officer Kevin Craft with the Mississippi Forestry Commission says that anyone could be affected by sudden wildfires, but a few preventative measures can go a long way.

“Mainly, just don’t do any outdoor burning at this time. Be really cautious if you do. Make sure to have a water hose around or a way to put that fire out,” Craft said. “And another thing is, if you’re driving down the road with a trailer, make sure that
