MADISON, Wis. — Slow down and phones down — that's the message Dane County law enforcement agencies are sending after a rise in school-related traffic injuries.

According to the nonprofit Safe Communities, last year in Dane County, three children between the ages of 5 and 18 were injured walking, and two were injured while biking in school zones.

Over the past four years, 27 walking kids and 19 biking kids were injured going to or from school.

In the summer of 2020, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and the Common Council started Madison’s Vision Zero initiative to combat the sharp spike in traffic-related crashes and injuries.
