Former President Donald Trump announced plans to file a $15 billion defamation and libel lawsuit against The New York Times. This decision follows his previous threats to take legal action against the newspaper for its reporting on a note and drawing allegedly linked to Jeffrey Epstein, which Trump denies writing.
In a recent social media post, Trump criticized The New York Times, stating, "The 'Times' has engaged in a decades long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole." He added, "The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!"
Trump referenced other legal actions he has taken, including a lawsuit against ABC News and anchor George Stephanopoulos. In that case, a court ordered ABC to pay $15 million towards Trump's presidential library to settle a lawsuit over an inaccurate claim that he had been found civilly liable for raping writer E. Jean Carroll.
The former president indicated that the lawsuit against The New York Times would be filed in Florida but did not provide additional details. A court filing has confirmed that Trump is indeed suing the newspaper. The ABC network has reached out to The New York Times for a response.
