The November election will be a stern test of political clout for former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who is trying to help one of his allies win a City Council seat against Mayor Michelle Wu’s hand-picked cronies.

Walsh, a white moderate union guy from Dorchester, is part of old Boston that doesn’t exist any more. His political capital is limited and he’s been totally eclipsed by Wu.

If Walsh, who served a stint as Joe Biden’s Labor Secretary, and Wu were on the same ballot, Walsh would lose handily.

But the former mayor, who once considered running for governor and is currently the high-paid head of the National Hockey League Players’ Association, isn’t giving up on politics.
