BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - A health care deadline is quietly approaching in Washington, but it could hit hard right here in a rural state like North Dakota. If Congress doesn’t act soon, many residents could lose tax credits and lose their health insurance provided by the Affordable Care Act.

For many in North Dakota, the monthly cost of health insurance is manageable, thanks to ACA federal tax credits that reduce their premiums. But those credits are set to expire unless Congress renews them. Advocates say the impact will be widespread and won’t just affect those who are low-income.

“Having access to health care tax credits is something that can literally help anyone. You don’t know what type of situation you could be in,” said Eniola Soetan, the North Dakota Vice State Legislative ambassa
