Meta Platforms has started sending out payments to millions of Facebook users in the United States as part of a $725 million settlement over claims the social media giant mishandled personal data.
The settlement, finalized after years of litigation stemming from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, compensates users who filed claims alleging Facebook improperly shared their information with third parties. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, denies wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid a trial.
Anyone who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022, was eligible to file a claim by Aug. 25, 2023. Payments began rolling out in early September, with claimants receiving email notifications several days before their distribution, according to the settlement administrator’s website.
