A body has been found by police searching for a man who was last seen 48 hours ago. Richard Thornton was last seen in the early hours of Saturday.

Appeals had been made on social media by friends and his family appealing for help to locate him. Doorbell footage showed a taxi leaving an address just before 5am on Saturday from the Werneth Low area which had picked Mr Thornton up.

Werneth Low - a country park on the Tamside and Stockport border. The villages of Woodley, Greave, Gee Cross , Mottram and Romiley lie on the sides of the low.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "We can confirm that the body of who we believe to be missing man, Richard Thornton, has sadly been found deceased this morning off Mottram Old Road, Hyde (16 September).
