A specialized MRI scan can identify elevated brain iron levels, which can predict early stage cognitive decline, a study found.

The Kennedy Krieger Institute study tracked 158 older adults over seven years. Researchers found that MRI scans detected higher iron levels in two parts of the brain years before patients developed memory problems. Latest Forecast

The scans also helped predict the speed of a patient's cognitive decline.

Most hospitals already have MRI machines, and the study's authors said the technology could help enroll people into clinical trials for treatments.
