Magazine for firearm found in Iberville student's backpack

A student at the Math, Science & Arts Academy-East in Iberville Parish was carrying a magazine for a firearm in their backpack Tuesday morning and is now facing disciplinary action, the superintendent announced in a release.

"We want to be very clear that no weapon was found; only an empty magazine was discovered," Iberville School Superintendent Louis Voiron Jr. said.

An administrator discovered the unloaded magazine in the student's backpack during a routine security check, Voiron continued in the release.

"We want to assure you that at no time was the safety of any student or staff member compromised," Voiron said.

The superintendent emphasized that the finding of the device proves the importance of the security checks the school system began implementing two years ago.
