OTTAWA — Chrystia Freeland has resigned from her position as Canada’s transport minister to take on a new role as the special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced her appointment today.

Freeland shared her resignation on social media but will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament until the next election. After a cabinet meeting, she was seen leaving with a smile while conversing with Carney. However, both did not address questions from reporters waiting outside.

Freeland has been a leading advocate for Ukraine on the international stage. She has played a crucial role in efforts to seize Russian financial assets in the West, aiming to use those funds to support Ukraine's defense. Recently, she attended a conference in Kyiv focused on strategies to end the ongoing war that Russia initiated in 2014.

Her political career has seen significant shifts, including her resignation as finance minister late last year, which contributed to Justin Trudeau stepping down as prime minister in January. Freeland's new role underscores her commitment to Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
