Tyler James Robinson, 22, has been charged with the murder of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk. The charges include aggravated murder, discharging a firearm, and multiple counts of obstruction of justice and witness tampering. Robinson is also accused of committing a violent act in the presence of children.
The incident occurred on September 10 at Utah Valley University in Orem, where Kirk was shot in the neck during a rally. He was 31 years old at the time of his death.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced at a press conference that prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Robinson. Gray stated that the decision was made independently, based solely on the evidence and the nature of the crime. "The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy," he said. "Charlie Kirk was murdered while engaging in one of our most sacred and cherished American rights, the bedrock of our democratic republic, the free exchange of ideas and a search for truth, understanding and a more perfect union."
Robinson is being held without bail. Prosecutors allege that a firearm found at the scene contained Robinson's DNA. They also claim he attempted to conceal the weapon and the clothing he wore during the incident. Additionally, it is alleged that he instructed his roommate to delete texts that could implicate him in the shooting and to remain silent if questioned by authorities.
Robinson, a resident of Washington, Utah, has been in custody since his arrest. Investigators have conducted searches at his family home, located 240 miles southwest of the shooting site, and have spoken with his relatives as part of the ongoing investigation.
