DOOR PENINSULA, Wisconsin (WWNY) - More than 100 years after it sank, a ship that was based in Ogdensburg has been located.

The F.J. King has been one of the most highly sought-after shipwrecks.

The 144-foot, three-masted wooden schooner was built in Toledo, Ohio, in 1867 and sank in Lake Michigan in 1886.

The search for the wreck has been underway for nearly 50 years. It was so elusive that it was even dubbed the “ghost ship.”

Now, a team led by researcher Brendan Baillod has found the shipwreck in Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula.

Researchers say the F.J. King was carrying a cargo of iron and ore from Michigan to Chicago when it met its fate.

The website, Maritime History of the Great Lakes, has newspaper clippings from 1885 and 1886. One says the schooner was out of Morristown, New York
