A man from Schenectady, NY used a brick to smash a jewelry case at the Downtown Crossing Macy's last week, but store security were on him like ugly on a stick and prevented him from leaving after he tried to scoop up the sparklies with his bare hands, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Boston Municipal Court Judge James Stanton yesterday ordered Ronald Paige, 49, held in lieu of $5,000 bail on charges of larceny over $1,200, malicious destruction of property over $2,000, breaking into a depository and, of course, possession of a burglarious tool, to wit, a brick. Stanton also ordered Paige to stay well clear of the Macy's.
