This fall, the government of Alberta will be implementing a new Canadian citizenship marker to Albertans’ drivers licenses or ID cards, aiming to make it easier for citizens to access to government services.

“This is about more than convenience, it’s about trust,” said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. “With a single, secure card proving both identity and citizenship, Albertans will face fewer hurdles when applying for government services. This will also strengthen the integrity of elections and other systems that rely on proof of citizenship.”

Smith also hopes that it will strengthen the integrity of elections on all scales, adding another level of defense against non-citizens attempting to vote.
