The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is planning to add 6,200 mega watts to the Chickamauga location.
More than 3,500 mega watts are currently under construction and these new additions are expected to meet the growing power demands in the area.
The Chickamauga Dam one of 29 hydroelectric dams operated by TVA.
Construction on the dam started in 1936, and it was finished in 1940.
There are four generating units.
The first three were completed during the same year as the dam.
The fourth unit was completed in 1952.
These generators power more than 83,000 homes and businesses.
The new project is said to improve the longevity of power.
