DES MOINES, Iowa ( KCCI ) - Iowa Republican Jack Whitver says he is stepping down as state Senate majority leader and will not seek re-election next year, KCCI reports.
The decision comes after doctors diagnosed him with a brain tumor last year, which he has since been undergoing radiation and drug therapy for.
He was reelected majority leader last November, a position he has held since 2018.
Iowa Senate Republicans must elect a new person to fill the position. The date of the election is currently unknown.
45-year-old Jack Whitver, of Grimes, represents Iowa Senate District 23, which includes parts of Dallas and Polk counties. He has served in the Iowa Senate for over a decade.
