LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- The state of Michigan is stepping up its scrutiny of microplastics as they continue to make their way into the Great Lakes, the environment, and our bodies.

Officials are starting to take notice. A package of bills in the state legislature hopes to prevent and clean up microplastic pollution in Michigan. The bills were co-authored by the Michigan Microplastics Coalition, an organization dedicated to bringing awareness to the tiny plastics they say are causing big problems for the Great Lakes and our health.

“It’s looking like microplastics in our environment are coming into our food chain, into our bodies, into our babies, into our homes, and into our lives,” said Tami Renkoski, co-founder of the Michigan Microplastics Coalition.
