Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Tuesday signed an executive order designed to protect the rights of protesters following actions taken during a recent demonstration outside an ICE facility in the area.

“The city of Chicago will do everything under its control to protect our communities and defend democracy,” Johnson said after signing the three-page order.

The “Protecting Chicago Initiative” ensures that even in the face of interference from the federal government the Chicago Police Department will protect Chicagoans’ First Amendment rights while taking appropriate measures to preserve public safety.
