ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - September is Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month, and the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is also celebrating its 30th year in operation.

It’s an odd thing to celebrate decades of treating children during what’s likely the worst times in their lives, but the center tackles the conundrum with aplomb.

Brianna McGoldrick and her son Asher have spent a lot of time at the center over the past year. At three years old, Asher was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a form of brain cancer.

“The world feels like it’s just shattering,” McGoldrick said of learning Asher’s diagnosis. “We’re here every two weeks, and we’ll be here every two weeks until roughly November.”
