BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - North Dakota has a large population of Ukrainians, and many have found their safe haven here after the war with Russia broke out in 2022. There is no end in sight to the conflict, however, and many of them fear they may have to leave the U.S.
Dmytro Somkin loves his country. He only left Ukraine because the war broke out, but a part of it has always remained with him as he came to the U.S. to serve as the music coordinator for Faith Lutheran Church in Bismarck.
Back in Ukraine, he was a soloist with the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Choir, and is proud to contribute to the church and Bismarck community with his talents. He is rehearsing Ukraine’s national anthem before church for a performance at the International Day of Peace Volunteers for Ukraine Fundraiser.
