Al McCoy was the unmistakable ‘Voice of the Suns’ and a proud member of the Glendale community.
On Monday, Sept, 29, the city of Glendale and the Phoenix Suns and Mercury Foundation will celebrate the man whose voice defined Suns basketball in the city he called home for 50 years.
Starting at 8:30 that morning, Glendale will begin ceremonies to rename the former New World Park, at 50th and Barbara avenues - just south of Olive Avenue, Al McCoy Memorial Park.
Glendale will rename the park's basketball court Shazam Court. In October 2024, then-Vice Mayor Ian Hugh suggested the renaming ad the council approved the idea later that year.
McCoy died at age 91 on Sept. 21, 2024.
