TORTILLA FLAT, AZ (AZFamily) — Two friends coasted along State Route 88, also known as the Apache Trail, on Sunday morning to take in the scenery and watch the sunrise before things took a dangerous turn off a steep cliff.

Thankfully, those in the area didn’t hesitate to help and were part of a daring rescue.

“It was pretty treacherous,” said Lenny Marshall. “Lot of like loose rocks, scrambling, you know. I mean, there was cactuses, everything.”

Marshall and his friends risked it all to save strangers.

“Life is precious and on our way down I was just praying they were going to be OK,” said Marshall.

19-year-old Maddie Davis and 21-year-old Andrew Nelson survived after reportedly driving off a nearly 400-foot cliff on the treacherous road.
