SOMERSET COUNTY, Maine — A 69-year-old man from New Jersey died Tuesday afternoon while hunting in central Somerset County, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said.

David Ridgway of Bridgeton, New Jersey reportedly collapsed while walking in the woods hunting bear around 8 a.m. in the northern part of Pierce Pond Township near the Dead River.

Members of his hunting group performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to emergency personnel.

Eustis Fire and Rescue, a Carrabassett Valley EMT, and Maine Game Wardens responded to the incident. Ridgway was carried out of the woods and brought to Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington.

The incident remains under investigation, and officials said updates will be provided if new information becomes available.
