ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WITN) - The Oceanana Pier in Atlantic Beach is still closed amid Hurricane Erin’s aftermath.
Even though Hurricane Erin didn’t make landfall in August, the high waves caused minor damage to the end of the pier.
September marks the beginning of the fall mullet run fishing season, which attracts dozens of fishermen along Atlantic Beach.
Fishermen fishing next to the Oceanana Pier along the surf have mixed feelings about the pier being closed.
“We came down here specifically to fish off the pier,” fisherman Darren Creed said. “We planned our trip with the hope that it would be fixed.”
“I understand the hurricane damage. Contractors are full up of work everywhere, probably. It’s understandable, but I like surf fishing, so I’m good right next to the pier surf fishing,
