A man who officials said was in mental distress and making threats outside of a southwest Miami-Dade grocery store died after a sergeant shot him Tuesday night.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz told reporters they received a 911 call about a man waving a gun at people outside of Davis Grocery on Southwest 120th Avenue.
A sheriff's sergeant responded and told the suspect to show his hands, but he did not comply, prompting the exchange of gunfire, Cordero-Stutz said.
The suspect was struck and taken to the hospital, where he later died. The sergeant, a 19-year veteran of the department, was not injured, Cordero-Stutz said.
The suspect, in his 40s, was not identified, but the sheriff said he had an extensive criminal past.
