BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - ShotSpotter is sticking around in Birmingham for at least three more years.

The City Council approved a new contract Tuesday worth $3 million with Sound Thinking Inc. for the gunshot detection technology.

For those who are unfamiliar, what ShotSpotter does is right in the name! It’s technology that “spots” the sound of gunshots around the city.

While some people question the accuracy of ShotSpotter, Councilor Hunter Williams says he’s seen it work firsthand. Through a demonstration, he watched shots ring out and then get detected on computers which showed the location, how many shots, the caliber of gun, and the likelihood of an accurate report.
