The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board — the independent oversight agency charged with monitoring the nation's nuclear facilities — has been without a quorum for months, according to a Government Accountability Office report issued earlier this month.

Three of the facilities the agency monitors are in New Mexico: the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant outside Carlsbad, Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque and Los Alamos National Laboratory in Northern New Mexico.

The five-person board , which has been plagued with vacancies across different presidential administrations, hasn't been full since 2017, according to the report. The situation became more dire this year, after chair Joyce Connery retired in January, leaving just two members.
