A Niles woman died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a downtown intersection, according to police.
The Niles Police Department said officers and firefighters were dispatched around 6:58 a.m. to Broadway and South Third Street for a car-versus-pedestrian crash.
The pedestrian, identified as 56-year-old Namita Smadder of Niles, suffered serious head injuries. She was treated at the scene and taken to Corewell Health Niles Hospital before being transferred to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where she later died.
Investigators said Smadder was crossing South Third Street at the southwest corner of the intersection when she was struck by a vehicle driven by 59-year-old David Roeder of Niles. Police said Roeder had been attempting to turn right from eastbound Broadway on
