As we age, our fine motor skills, also known as manual dexterity, tend to decline. Instead of adding more exercises to your occupational therapy to-do list that feel like work, there are many fun ways to engage your hands that have multiple benefits, including helping to keep your fine motor skills intact and even improve them.

Jessica Tipton, program director at the West Chester Area Senior Center in Chester County, said they offer many activities that engage the hands.

“We offer things like macrame, knitting, beading and crochet,” Tipton said of some of the craft activities that are either led by volunteers or peers of members of the Center. “There’s laughing and engagement and they come out feeling cared for.”
