The Walk to Defeat ALS is set for Sept. 27 at Burlington's Oakledge Park.

The event, which begins at 11:15 a.m., aims to support people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, according to an announcement.

The Walk to Defeat ALS is billed as the world’s largest event focused on raising money for people with ALS and their families. Fundraising efforts have helped the ALS Association fight the disease by funding new treatments, discovering new genes, creating global research collaborations and expanding access to care.

Many participants have a loved one battling the disease, while others walk in memory of someone who has lost their battle. Some participate simply to make ALS a more manageable disease for everyone while a cure is sought.
