GARLAND, Texas — Pokémon cards have exploded in value in recent years, and police say that boom has made them a target for thieves.

Garland police say 26-year-old Anthony Lorenzo Giron smashed into TP Collectibles off South Jupiter Road on Sept. 3 and stole thousands of trading cards. An arrest warrant affidavit filed in Dallas County estimates the initial loss at more than $10,000 — but shop owner Thomas Pham says the number is higher.

“Pokémon is my life 24/7 nowadays,” Pham said. “Ever since I started doing this business, it’s just wake up Pokémon and go to sleep after you’re done with Pokémon.”

Pham said surveillance cameras captured a masked man breaking the shop’s front glass, rushing inside, and scooping cards into a bag from their display cases.
