CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A boy died Wednesday after he was shot following a reported car theft in a Charlotte neighborhood.

The Sept. 17 shooting happened around 6:15 a.m. along in the Roxborough II neighborhood in the Steele Creek area.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a person reportedly tried to steal a Dodge Challenger in the neighborhood, and at some point during the theft, shots were fired. Those shots entered a home and hit the boy multiple times.

The car thief got away with the car, while the boy died before he could be taken to the hospital.

Police called the shooting “tragic and unnecessary.”

It was unclear if police have identified the shooter or if they have anyone in custody.
