BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - North Dakota has officially broken its record for the most tornadoes in a calendar year, following a destructive outbreak across central parts of the state on Sunday, Sept. 14.
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the state has confirmed at least 73 tornadoes in 2025, surpassing the previous record of 61 set in 1999. Other notable years include: • 2010: 60 tornadoes • 2011: 59 tornadoes • 1976: 52 tornadoes
The final count for 2025 may rise further as surveys continue.
Among the strongest tornadoes reported this year: • June 27 — EF2 tornado caused damage to a farmstead west of Temvik in Emmons County • September 14 — EF2 tornado near Denhoff in Sheridan County • September 14 — EF2 tornado near Beaver Bay in Emmons County
