MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Changes are coming to a local recycling program. Instead of being locked into the monthly fee, people in Minot can now opt out of the program at any time.

Back in 2023, the City of Minot launched its very first recycling program. At the time, neighbors had just three months to opt out — otherwise, they were automatically signed up for a $2.60 monthly fee.

But now, that rule is changing. Minot City Council has ended the mandate, meaning residents can call and opt out any time, making the program now fully voluntary.

Last year, more than 1,200 tons of recycling came through the facility. The city said it's too soon to know how much that number could change once residents are given the choice to opt out.
