Cherry Hill High School East — a South Jersey school approximately 20 minutes from Center City — hit headlines last school year following the dismissal of an LGBTQ+ leader.

David Francis-Maurer — a former assistant principal who was hired in 2023 to oversee the class of 2027 — believes he was terminated and forced to spend his last few months on administrative leave in retaliation for whistleblowing. A lawsuit he filed on Sept. 8 alleges that the high school’s former principal, Daniel Finkle — who resigned just two days after the lawsuit was filed — engaged in discriminatory behavior and made queerphobic, sexist, racist, antisemitic and politically charged remarks.
