An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has been relieved of his duties following an incident at a federal courthouse in New York City. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently investigating the event, according to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
Video footage of the incident shows a woman pleading with the agent as her husband is being detained. She can be heard saying, "you don't care about anything," while the agent responds with repeated remarks of "Adios." The situation escalates when the agent suddenly pushes the woman against a wall, causing both to fall to the ground. The video captures the woman’s children crying around her as the agent stands over her.
McLaughlin stated, "The officer's conduct in this video is unacceptable and beneath the men and women of ICE. Our ICE law enforcement are held to the highest professional standards, and this officer is being relieved of current duties as we conduct a full investigation."
New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who was present at the courthouse but did not witness the incident firsthand, shared on social media that the woman's husband had been detained by ICE agents moments before the altercation. He noted that the agents did not identify themselves, present a warrant, or provide lawful grounds for the detention. Lander also mentioned that the woman was taken to the hospital following the incident.
In earlier footage, agents can be seen attempting to apprehend the woman's husband, who insists he is not doing anything wrong. An agent is heard instructing another to "Just grab her, pull her away," as another agent appears to grab the woman by her hair.
Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., reported that the woman and her two young children sought refuge in his office after the incident. He called for disciplinary action against the ICE agent involved, stating, "Monica and her 2 young children fled to my office for safety after she was assaulted by this @ICEgov agent in an egregious act of excessive force. This is unacceptable conduct from this ICE agent. @Sec_Noem must take appropriate disciplinary action and implement measures to prevent this from happening again."
A spokesperson for NYC Mayor Eric Adams expressed concern over the incident, stating, "Like so many, we have seen the upsetting images of a federal agent appearing to shove a woman — whose husband had just been detained by ICE — to the ground, and we are pleased to hear this incident is being investigated. Our entire city is less safe when immigrants are afraid to use basic services and attend court hearings."
