A video showing a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer allegedly yelling at a Canadian driver has prompted an investigation by the agency. The 39-second clip, which surfaced on social media, captures the incident that occurred on September 22, around 7:55 a.m., on Interstate 90 in New York State, near the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge connecting Ontario and New York.
In the video, a male officer, identifiable by an insignia on his sleeve, is seen driving a gray pickup truck. He leans out of his vehicle and repeatedly shouts, “Never come to the U.S. again!” The video includes captions that suggest the driver honked at the officer due to his Ontario license plate, leading to the confrontation. The captions also state, “Sees camera. Gets shy. Tries to run,” as the pickup speeds away without signaling.
CBP spokesperson Mike Niezgoda addressed the incident, emphasizing the agency's commitment to integrity and professionalism. He stated, “U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stresses honor and integrity in every aspect of our mission. CBP employees, officers and agents perform their duties with honor and distinction, working tirelessly every day to keep our country safe.”
Niezgoda confirmed that CBP is conducting a managerial review of the incident. He noted that while federal privacy laws limit the discussion of individual cases, the agency takes allegations of employee misconduct seriously. CBP aims to maintain transparency regarding investigative outcomes, as reflected in their annual reports, with the latest report available for fiscal year 2023.
