A dedicated social space helps with the heavy emotional load: regular micro- and macro-aggressions, isolation, and pressure to outperform non-Black peers just to be seen as equals. Add the absence of safe spaces to seek advice or admit uncertainty, and the weight grows. What might seem like “just wanting a social space” is often what helps Black associates stay.
