A plea to extend the number of learning assistants for children with additional support needs has been made at a West Dunbartonshire council meeting.
There are currently 11,781 school pupils in West Dunbartonshire Council, 5470 have additional support needs (ASN) and mostly attend a mainstream school.
Around 280 pupils are supported in specialist settings as they require a more specific learning environment.
A report to the council said a small percentage of children and young people with additional support needs are also supported by day or residential providers in external placements.
During Wednesday’s education committee it was pointed out that the number of ASN pupils had increased and questions were raised if the council had plans to extend the number of learning assistants.
