COOK COUNTY, Ill. (WEVV) — Illinois has reported its first West Nile virus–related death of the year.

The death was reported in suburban Cook County.

According to the state department of health, the person who died was in their 60s.

West Nile virus spreads through mosquito bites and can cause severe illness, especially in older adults. Most people experience no or mild symptoms.

To protect against the virus, residents are advised to follow the "Three R’s": reduce standing water around your home, repel bites with insect repellent and protective clothing, and report stagnant water to your local health department.
