King County will direct $755,000 in grants to local hunger relief and food distribution groups, after uncertainty around federal funding halted plans for a major food hub.

Farmers, food banks and distributors will be able to buy commercial refrigerators, freezers, ovens and other equipment needed to store, prepare and distribute healthy foods to marginalized communities, county officials said.

The funding comes as some low-income families will this fall see their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits slashed or cut entirely, as new restrictions under a budget reconciliation bill signed into law by President Donald Trump in July begin to roll out. Food banks across the region are bracing for increased demand.
