A hiker in Yellowstone National Park was injured by a bear Tuesday, marking the park’s first incident of this kind in four years.

A 29-year-old man was hiking alone on the Turbid Lake Trail, northeast of Mary Bay in Yellowstone Lake, when the incident occurred, according to the National Park Service .

The hiker began to deploy bear spray when the bear made contact and he sustained significant but non-life-threatening injuries to his chest and left arm.

The trail is about 2.5 miles from the Pelican Valley Trailhead, within the Pelican Valley Bear Management Area. In this region, grizzly bears often concentrate seasonally due to the abundance of elk and bison carcasses. To minimize human-bear encounters, recreational access in these areas is restricted during certain times of year.
