ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — Firefighters helped rescue an entangled swan from an Attleboro pond Wednesday morning.

Crews were called to Cranberry Pond near Leedham Street just before 9 a.m. for reports of an animal in distress.

The swan was about 100 feet from shore with its wings and body wrapped in fishing line. While the bird resisted firefighters' efforts, it was eventually freed and quickly swam away.

Animal Control also responded to assist.

"This was a good opportunity for our members to take the training they receive and apply it in the real world in a less time-sensitive situation," District Chief Mike Maitland said. "When the day comes that our firefighters need to conduct a water rescue involving a person, they will be better prepared."
