Tasmania's proposed AFL stadium and team face fresh political turmoil, with the state's Labor opposition softening their support and a key independent declaring she likely isn't on board.
The island state's planning commission on Wednesday recommended the 23,000-seat roofed waterfront venue at Hobart's Macquarie Point not be built, based on cost and its size.
Still, Liberal Premier Jeremy Rockliff has pledged to push on with a parliamentary vote for approval by the end of the year.
Construction of a stadium at the site is a condition of the Tasmania Devils being granted entry into the AFL and AFLW in 2028.
The Liberals need Labor's votes to get the stadium through the lower house. They also need Labor's support plus several independents to get it through the upper house.
