JASPER COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) — Spay and neuter is what animal shelters have consistently advocated for, but after issues with one specific breed overpopulating Jasper County, advocacy turned into an emergency.

“If we don't want to euthanize animals, and nobody wants to do that, right? We've got to get control of it,” said Jasper County councilman, Chris VanGeison.

Jasper County council called for a 60-day emergency ordinance after they were receiving around 5-6 dogs a day into the shelter.

VanGeison said around 85% of those dogs are Pitbull and Bully-like breeds.

“The ordinance basically states that all bully breeds have to be neutered or spayed,” said VanGeison.

The ordinance was backed by a letter of support from the Charleston Animal Society.
