NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A historic sign now stands in the Liberty Hill community, signifying a place where generations of African American families got their start to a better life.

The marker was erected by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History to recognize Louie Tenement.

The marker is located at the corner of Luella Avenue and Lester Street, just off East Montague near the train station.

The ceremony was held on Wednesday and was attended by North Charleston City officials, including Mayor Reggie Burgess, who grew up in the Liberty Hill Community.

“The ground that we stand on is holy ground. It’s holy ground. They gave up a lot to bring us to this point,” Burgess said.
