VALLEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The sale of the Calkin Bridge Dam outside Allegan is being viewed with cautious optimism and hope for Lake Allegan's future.
The dam has been holding back the Kalamazoo River since 1935, when it was built by the city of Allegan. Consumers Energy took ownership in 1969. Since construction, the reservoir created by the dam has fed Lake Allegan. Multiple homes dot the shoreline.
On the other side of the dam, the river rushes past fishermen of all ages. Augustine Munoz is one of them and said he hoped to catch his first salmon.
"My dad like, hypes them up so much. And this is just like a spot that I like because we were from Holland, so we know the drive over here. I just like cruising and I like fishing. Those are my two favorite things," he said Wednesday a
